WhatsApp Video Calling. The game changer.
Yes, it is here, finally!
The most anticipated feature, more than one billion people worldwide using WhatsApp had been waiting for, has started rolling out for all of its users. Video Calling.
The new FREE video calling feature has been available for its beta version users, for a while. The messaging giant has officially made it available for all Android, iOS and Windows phone users, starting November 14, 2016. Users can now check out the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Windows Store for updates. (P.S.: Both caller’s and receiver’s versions must be updated and compatible.)

Since the acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook Inc., the app has seen tremendous improvements. WhatsApp video calling has been an expected upgrade, since its voice calling feature went live on March, 2015. Moreover, attaching GIFs, documents, new camera features to place stickers and draw over photos et cetera, has great reception among its users.
To make video call:
- Open WhatsApp (Of course!)
- Go to Contacts tab
- Find and tap the contact you want to initiate a call with
- Tap on the phone icon on the top right side of the screen
- From the popup that appears, choose video call, and voila!

Skype and FaceTime are arguably considered to be its competitors. WhatsApp video calling has its edge over FaceTime as it is a cross-platform application, unlike its Apple counterpart which works on just iOS devices. That’s one down. Google has also joined the video calling sphere with its recent app, Duo, after its failed attempts to promote Hangouts (which is still pretty good for group video chats!). But, as a matter of fact, Duo isn’t considered to pose much of a threat to WhatsApp as it just has one feature, video calling. When it comes to Skype, which has been a pioneer in revolutionising video calling, it is the most widely used video chatting application. The significant advantage of Skype is that it can be used in various devices, be it Android (mobiles, tablets), iOS (mobiles, tablets, PCs) and Windows (mobiles, tablets, PCs). It also has group video chatting feature, which is yet to come to WhatsApp. But when it comes to data usage, I guess WhatsApp outruns Skype. Since its launch, WhatsApp Messenger has been a huge success especially because of its low data consumption and hope it continues the same with its new addition too. Moreover, WhatsApp takes encryption very seriously. So, your messages, files, voice calls and video calls will continue to remain private (as they claim). Not all such apps have this feature. Other supposed “competitors” in the market are Facebook Messenger, Viber, BBM, Line, WeChat….and many more.
Some additions people would expect are group video chats, photo filters and stories (as in Snapchat and Instagram). Hope WhatsApp wouldn’t disappoint us.
Will WhatsApp video calling outrun the other candidates in the battle? Will it be a strong contender? Would you give up other applications and switch to WhatsApp for video chats? Whatever be it, come on people, it’s WhatsApp! ;)
We welcome the new born feature from the WhatsApp family.
